EggWhite says he would be less suspicious of the key showing up if the sign hadn’t shown up on HurryUp at the same time. Joneigh suggests the book get stored in her saddle bag and the key be kept with EggWhite. Joneigh postulates that maybe the tunnels under the city that reach the pit are an access point and we could investigate that. Autumn wonders if the singing was to feed someone. Joneigh says that they froze in place while singing instead of throwing themselves in the pit. HurryUp says maybe not enough were singing to complete the summoning. Borealis says “Is it time to call up the chorus?” Joneigh wonders if we like the chorus as they could be dinner… or HurryUps desert? Autumn suggests Matthew & Oscar could help? But they might want to take the books back with them. Then she says that maybe Bristol could help with providence on the books. He asks if he would be spoiling anything by pointing out the note stuck to HurryUp’s head… “My brains are delicious and go good on toast”. Joneigh wonders if that means HER brains or the ones in the canisters. Bristol goes to check on something. When he comes back he says none of his records here say anything about Chained Oblivion, but he can send away for it if we want. But the other book was checked out thirty years ago by the grandson of Mo Finery (father of Plum Dandy who is in San Fransiscolt). His name is Lilac Rein. HurryUp says “Now that I think about it, I always wondered what happened to Lilac. He used to be so interesting to spy…um he used to be so interesting. I haven’t seen him since the house collapsed into the pit.” Aura asks her brother if he didn’t see any sign of the house when he was down in the pit. Borealis says no, but rambles about some memory of Aura and her first shield bubble. Joneigh notices that HurryUp disappeared and no one followed. No one knows where she went. Autumn mentions that maybe she got snatched by whomever is leaving the notes on HurryUp. A piece of paper flutters down from the darkness of the ceiling, it is an address. Autumn sends a note to the constable that they are following up on clues unless they all turn up missing.
They show up at the address and Joneigh hears what sounds like HurryUp muttering… “Oh this is still in good shape, I wonder if I can fit all this in my bedroom. Aura checks the mailbox and is buried under a big pile of library notices. The yard is overgrown. Jimmy says the polite thing would be to take those inside. The key is in the lock and we go inside. Aura takes the notices with her. HurryUp is downstairs, checking out all the items in the “sex dungeon”. The group follows her voice. “Oh My.” HurryUp says “Isn’t this great?!” Joneigh goes upstairs, Autumn goes looking for a library or kitchen. New note on HurryUp as they leave. ”I’m best when bridled.” Aura is checking out the sex dungeon. HurryUp is wondering if one of the dildos will fit in her tail. Sunny finds the second sex dungeon “OH GOD there is more”, on the upper floor. Autumn notices that 3 of the other overdue books are in the library on the desk with the blotting paper (that shows he was correlating stuff from the book they are looking for) and there is an odd painting behind the desk. She opens the curtain to see it better. It is a shadow of a pony with a group of ponies cowering at its feet: Celestia, Mare in the Moon and the Dark Stallion among them. Then a note flutters down “The painting lies!” (all the notes have in the same handwriting). She says, “What does it lie about?” The note under her hoof changes to say “I never cower!” Joneigh finds a secret passage and follows it up to the second library! She looks around and sees that there is only one book here that isn’t a scroll. It looks a lot like the chained book she has… but it is chained to a lectern in the center of the room. As she approaches the lectern, she sees a giant pipe organ at the far end of the room. She walks up to the organ and presses a key. A musical note is heard through out the house. Also, everyone hears squealing and fluttering of hundreds of bats disturbed by the organ being played. She wipes away dust from the top line and reads the sheet music title that is standing on the organ “Unchain the Oblivion”. She closes the sheet music. Autumn tries to follow the sound to its origin in the secret room in the attic. Joneigh points out the title and says she thinks if one were to play this it would sound just like what the rest of the group was singing in the pit, but that this one (points to herself) is disinclined to try. Aura found a copy of the old Brindlebury Gazette on the bedside table. It is folded open to the funeral notice for Bristol’s great aunt, Velum Index, who owned the house that collapsed into the pit. The notice is circled. Autumn figures out that while the funeral was happening, it was the perfect time for someone to go through her papers. It was at the same time that our group was poking around the house. “You mean it wasn’t even our fault!?” She taunts the note in her hoof. It spontaneously combusts. HurryUp starts choking and she coughs up a crumpled note. Autumn gives her something to drink and unfolds the note. “Burn the music and stop throwing valuable things down the hole.” Autumn asks EggWhite what he thinks about that. Everyone looks to Jimmy as he says, “If the spells from the pit are musical and this is based on them, we don’t want them spread around so burning them sounds like a good idea.” Autumn worries that the music might have those eggs in it, but Joneigh thinks the paper couldn’t hold it. Joneigh puts on her big gloves and picks up the music and heads for the kitchen fireplace.
As they are burning the music, someone bursts through the back door and says ‘Ah ha! Burning evidence I see.” It is a golden Pegasus with a white mane and behind her is a slate gray earth pony with a dark blue mane. Both EggWhite and HurryUp disappears at this point. Constable Hobb hurries up behind them saying “Wait, let me introduce you!” Aura looks the Pegasus right I the face “That heresy, you have no idea that’s actually evidence.” She puts out her hoof “Hi maybe you don’t know who I am, my name is Aurora and I am the local magic investigator.” The Pegasus knows who she is and she is suspect number 1. “If that is the case, then you are being unprofessional by telling me everything.” Sunny steps to Aura’s side and flashes her Inspector General badge and says that they found something that was dangerous that needed sanitizing. The other detective ran to the fireplace but found only ashes. Aura asks if the officers are always so eager. Hobb interrupts to say this is Detectives LaceWing and StoneHoof who have been sent from San Palamino to investigate Bullion’s murder. They want our group to leave this place as it is the scene of a crime in an ongoing investigation. They comment on some missing persons cases that haven’t been investigated. Joneigh points out that this scene has nothing to do with the case they have said they are here for… and if we leave they will mess up the scene of that the group was investigating. Hobb is going to ask the two detectives to step aside to talk with him for a moment. Joneigh has turned and gone back up to the secret room, closing the door behind her. She is unchaining the book from the lectern and putting it in her bag. EggWhite appears at the opening of the passage as she goes by and says he will distract them and disappears again. She quickly searches the room and decides nothing else pertains to their investigation. She leaves the secret room and closes the door and notices that the dust is filling in hoofmarks on their own… she whispers thanks to EggWhite… and goes to stand and stare at the paining behind the desk and makes notes on the ponies cowering. The group still in the kitchen overhear Hobb say loudly that the detectives have made a connection between Lilac and the murder due to some earlier correspondence.
The detectives eventually find Autumn and Joneigh in the library discussing the painting’s cowering ponies. They want to interrogate everyone that was at the restaurant that last night before Caviar died. They want to talk to Aura first. They ask when he left the dinner, she doesn’t pay attention to time that way. They ask where he was sitting, “Next to me”. Did you see what he ordered. Then who else was there and what everyone ate, etc. Aura answers factual type questions as minutely as she can, but since nothing happened at the party and she knows she is guilty. She won’t share how she “felt” or “thinks might have happened”. They want to know who greeted them or waited on them, and Aura answers evasively… some orange pony and some buff colored pony. She doesn’t notice servants. “Just kick the door open Jimmy, go ahead.” Jimmy walks in with his Uncle Gritts (retired lawyer), about this time. “Why are you talking to my client without me?” They explain that she isn’t under arrest and he responds that everyone has a right to counsel. Aura says she hasn’t told them anything they don’t already know, if they are good investigators. Uncle Grits McCorn wants to see the warrant, or why do they even have this gel in this room? Grits tells them they can asks questions, but he will tell his client not to answer any of them. “Warrant says you can investigate, but nothing about arresting anyone,” says Grits. Aura follows his advice. They finally have no more questions and that she shouldn’t leave town. Now they want to question Shucks. Grits advises him to keep his mouth shut, boy. Jimmy offers Shucks a toffee, for his nerves… Grits tells him to put his dark glasses. Now Shucks is role-playing. “My lawyer advised me not to answer”. Next up is Jimmy. Grits: “Ah’m advising mah client not to answer.” Jimmy takes a long time to say basically nothing.
Hobb shows up at Lilac’s house later that day and says “HurryUp Ann is this where you’re lurking?” She is. He wants to take her to his office to be interrogated by the visiting detectives. “Oooh Fun! Ok.” Grits tells her that her folks hired him and she shouldn’t answer any questions. HurryUp plays dumb hick. They want to know about the dinner that she was dressed up as the hostess for… she asks what a hostess is. Like that, it goes. Grits and Jimmy exchange a knowing glance and Grits plays like he is dozing. Detective StoneHoof gets fed up and slams her hooves on the table “Just answer the question and admit it!” Grits tells Shucks to help the girl out of the chair. “We are going.” They grump at him and he suggests they take it up with the Select Ponies. As they leave, they see Hobb leading the Country Club’s cook, Golden Ramsey, to his office. Grits turns and says “Ah’m advising mah client…” Like that. They finally go to the Select Ponies’ homes and each say “Mah office hours are posted, you can see me at City Hall.”
Grits gets the group together in his barn for a debrief. This is only round one. They have some judge in Canterlot who will send them whatever warrant they need. They must have a way to get more documentation quickly. When they are let loose, Joneigh and Autumn are doing some investigating of books at Autumn’s house. They finally remember they can ask Caviar questions if they can find HurryUp by the time they ask each other how to find her, she is right there. They ask him about Lilac and he doesn’t know who that is. The only one he can remember thinking might be interesting would be Arctica. He postulates that he wouldn’t have wanted to write to any hicks back then. Aura wonders if we can connect with the note writer and Autumn and Joneigh go into a chorus of “Nononononono”. A note floats down in front of Aura, “Oh Fun!” in a rain of glitter. As HurryUp turns to go home, they see a note on her flank “I am smarter than I look.” Everyone goes home to sleep.
In the middle of the night, they are all awakened by an emergency flare (the bright loud kind). Autumn sits up with her mane sticking out all over “Now what?!” Sunny grabs her medical stuff and heads to where it was fired. Everyone heads toward the alarm. Aura grabs a hat as she doesn’t have time to do her hair. Borealis jumps out of Sunny’s bed and out the window to rush to the emergency. Joneigh flew out immediately, Autumn checks on Moonbeam and runs for the town. Joneigh arrives at the Country Club first. There are a number of shadowy creatures fighting with Agent Ayyyyyyy who is standing over a downed Golden Ramsey. Joneigh can see that the shadows look like giant incorporial bats. She uses wind magic to blow most them over. Jimmy shows up next, swinging his axe handle. One bat thing tried to attack Joneigh but got caught in her backstream and went even further away from her. Jimmy hits one of the shadowbats and physical blood flies out of the incorporeal body! Joneigh knocks two more away from Ayyyyyy. Borealis arrives on the scene. Two of the bat things are trying to crawl against Joneigh’s wings. Jimmy aims to hit a bat at the two crawling and more blood flies and that one hits one of the crawlers who is knocked back. Borealis hits one with magic and it screams. Jimmy calls for light and Joneigh pulls something from her pack and shines it on the creatures. The others show up, Sunny heads for Golden and Aura throws magic at the flare to make it very bright, Autumn goes to see if she can help Sunny. Joneigh slams her glasses back on. HurryUp is heading to the fight and hears wings and squeaks behind her, she looks behind her and sees million of normal bats heading for the fight… “Bats!!!” Shucks is trying to talk to the bats. Sunny thinks the wounds don’t look like something the shadowbats would do. Autumn finds the suicide note and the bloody carving knife. Jimmy suggests to Borealis and Aura that a forcefield bubble around the mass of bats would be helpful. Shucks is jumping up & down “Squeak squeak squeak GUYS SQUEEK!” Aura runs up to Borealis and tells him “You shoot, I will hold them!” A shadowbat injures Borealis. EggWhite suddenly appears next to Sunny and Autumn. “Sorry, sorry, I was out.” “That’s ok, help Aurora and Borealis” says Sunny. Aura has captures most of the bats. Shucks says “Bad Bats, bad bats!” and starts hooting. Jimmy says “Aurora, make your bubble smaller.” She does so. Borealis is blasting, as is EggWhite, Jimmy is swing his axe, Ayyyyyyy is whipping, Joneigh is using wind, Shucks is calling owls and HurryUp is swinging her brass splyglass like a club all Jackie-Chan-Like. Many go flying and one seems to hit something in mid-air and for a moment HurryUp thinks it split into two… no, there was an invisible something over there that she just knocked the bat into. HurryUp goes after that thing, flipping through the air and kicking out at ‘nothing’. “Smack, scream, flutter.” Joneigh sees, out of the corner of her eye, a momentary peak at shape of a batpony just as HurryUp kicked air. She realizes that she has been feeling for a while other weather magic. So she grabs a small cloud and squeezes lightning out and throws it at the spot. This hits the evil batpony and it lights her up. The group recognizes him as one thrown down from the moon way back at that weird party. The pony had a magic wand made out of a unicorn horn, but she now drops it. Jimmy leaps at the falling wand trying to catch the wand. Joneigh fires lightning at her again. Aurora is still squeezing the normal bats. The batpony aims at Joneigh but her lightning hits and the freezing bolt hits a shadowbat, which freezes and falls to the ground and shatters. Shuck’s owls show up and take out the bats outside of the bubble. The remaining shadowbats flee the scene as the batpony is falling from the sky, unconscious or dead after Joneigh hit her again with lightning. Joneigh lands next to Autumn to see if she needs anything. Jimmy runs to catch the falling batpony cause live prisoners can answer questions, dead ones are harder. As Jimmy catches her, she says “Oh no” and a mystical blast hits her in the chest. Aura looks around to see where the blast came from, as does Jimmy. They see an all-black earth pony over there holding one of those unicorn wands makes a slight salute as the transport magic takes her. Jimmy asks HurryUp for one of the cylinders that has a dead brain in it, Autumn plucks the brain out of the cylinder, Sunny carefully gently and successfully the brain from Midnight Gleam’s brain into the waiting cylinder. The suicide note is fake, trying to plant evidence framing Jimmy for putting the eggs in the weed. It was payback for Jimmy embarrassing them in front of their queen. Poor Hobb arrived about the same time as the owls and is very confused. But there is no sign of Agent Ayyyyyy. Golden wakes and babbles out what happened to him.
In the morning when the group goes to the inn to talk to LaceWing and StoneHoof, they cannot find them. In their place they find ponysuits laying there. Stellar Abyss and Midnight Gleam had killed the real two detectives, skinned them and used their skins as disguise. Jimmy tells the group that leaves just White Vinegar, who has been reverted to childhood, and Stellar Abyss from those exiled from the moon. Stellar Abyss must have thought her partner would have talked and so killed her…without knowing how imaginative the group can be when taking prisoners. Once we are done questioning, we will have Aura take the cylinder to Celestia. “Oh it has been ages since I was given one of these! Thank you!”
